A is for Average: footnotes from Chapter 6
42) Here’s the link to MEGSSS (Math Enrichment for Gifted Secondary School Students.) If you have a mathematically precocious child, I’d look into it. I started the summer after 5th grade; the curriculum is very cleverly designed to introduce extremely abstract/advanced topics to young kids.
43) Here’s the link to the Wikipedia page for The Math Myth, if you want to engage more deeply with Hacker’s argument (which is extremely shortsighted, in my view.)
44) Here’s the link to the Wikipedia page about numeracy, if you’d like to read more about it.
45) Here’s the link to the website for Junior Achievement. If you’re looking for a volunteer organization that is focused on kids, Junior Achievement is a good one. The chapter QR will take you to a link to their website. Check out your local chapter.
46) Here’s the link to the paper by the Cleveland Fed on the labor market impacts of studying math. It’s a good read with plenty of charts to illustrate the magnitude of the impact.
47) Here’s the link to the National Bureau of Economic Research’s paper. It’s much denser than the Cleveland Fed paper, but it makes a very clear case for pushing for more math education.
48) Here’s the link to the Singapore Math site. I highly recommend it. For the record, neither I personally nor Advantage Testing have any financial relationship with Singapore Math; I recommend their stuff because it’s legitimately very good.
49) Here’s the link to the PISA website if you’d like to learn more about it. As you can see in the next footnote, our results relative to other countries are just sad.
50) Here’s the link to the PISA results, if you are eager to feel even more embarrassed about our performance in education as a country.
From “How you can help”
1) Here are some social media accounts of people who are evangelists for math:
2) Here is the link to the Advantage Testing Foundation/Jane Street Math Prize for Girls. If you click “Resources” and then “Previous Exams”, you will find some math problems that will curl your socks. Solutions are also posted. Enjoy!
